The forests of the wider area include the forest of Haidou and the waterfall of Livaditis.
Firstly, in the Rhodope Mountain range, near the Greek Bulgarian border, there is the Haidous forest with its majestic beech trees. Mount Haidou or Erymanthos is a natural boundary between Thrace and Eastern Macedonia, between the Regional Units of Xanthi and Drama, with the highest peak being Gyftokastro (altitude 1,828 m).
In the forest of Haidou, also known as the Public Forest of the Park, the Macedonian pine, fir, spruce and other forest species coexist with the beech trees. A part of the forest, with undisturbed stands of beech trees, has been declared a Natural Monument and a protected area. The forest and the surrounding area are home to bears, wolves, wild boars, deer and rare species of birdlife. Also, plants such as the endemic Rhodope lily (Lilium rhodopaeum) grow in Haidou.
