Menoikio as a mountainous area is characterized by its very intense relief, due to the rocks, which create landscapes with high aesthetic potential. In the mountainous zone there are marbles, in places intense, which create interesting basin-shaped depression formations. This layer completely prevents the penetration of water into the deeper layers, resulting in the large number of springs that appear in Menoikio and characterize the area of Drama morphologically.
More than 500 plant species were recorded in Menoikio Mountain, which make up about 20 habitats. Six habitats are considered to be of special value and have been placed under protection. The habitats in the area provide suitable shelters for a significant number of animals. In the area of Mikropolis there is a complex forest of century-old chestnut trees. There are also oak and beech forests and many mountain meadows, these beautiful and biodiversity-rich forests of Menoikio are a refuge for many wild animals.
The rich fauna and flora classify Menoikio among the most important mountainous areas of Eastern Macedonia and it is included in the European network of protected areas Natura 2000. To date, 31 species of mammals, 15 species of reptiles and 6 amphibians have been recorded. The number of bird species is also important for a mountain ecosystem, reaching 132 recorded species. Also characteristic of the Menoikio Mountain is the presence of wild horses. It is believed that there are more than 100 of them, which form herds and roam freely in the mountain meadows.
