The “cradle” custom, Volakas

It is one of the customs of the separate etiquette for the days of the Divine Drama and Easter. The customs in the villages of Drama, start from the Saturday of Lazarus and reach even the Sunday of Thomas.

On St. George’s Day, in Volakas, the young people of the village – by neighborhood – made the swing at the threshing floor. Two young men took it upon themselves to push the swing, while a group of girls sang the song of the same name. The song revealed, in a way, who or who loves the young one in the cradle. Just before they go down, they push the swing with great force, to go as high as it will go, exclaiming “did you see him or did you see her?” The first two times he/she says “no”, the third time he/she says “yes”, so they stop the swing for the next person to go down.
