In Pyrgos, the performance of the “Bears” event starts on the morning of Epiphany and lasts for three days. The men disguise themselves as “Bears” who wear full-length sheepskin coats and have bells around their waists. In each group there is the bearer, who directs the bears with a tambourine, spreading merriment and joy.
At 18.00, the tour of the village begins, ending in the square, where they dance and party throughout the night, to the sounds of the bagpipes, the Macedonian lyre and the dahare. The vigil is called “davanishka”.
The next day (January 7), at 18.00 there is a party with the “Bears” in the square. On January 8, at noon in the square, the action of “Bambos” (midwife), who throughout the year helped pregnant women to give birth more easily, is revived.
