Sunday of Thomas, April 23, revives in the cemeteries of Nea Kromni the age-old burial custom, which is organized by the Associations of Pontia “Akrites Nea Kromni Drama” and Preservation, Maintenance of Monuments of Nea Kromni, “Agios Ioannis Prodromos”.
The burial custom, with its Ancient Greek roots, is inextricably linked to the Pontic tradition and means honor to the memory of the dead, to the memory of the ancestors.
According to tradition, relatives and friends of the dead visit the cemeteries, where the priest makes a trisago and the relatives leave red eggs on the grave while pouring wine, accompanied by the Pontic lyre. Then Pontian delicacies are offered to those present.
It is an ancient custom, perfectly connected with the history of Pontus and it has been held in the area of Nea Kromni in Drama for 30 years.
