Klidonas, Prosotsani

Klidonas, Prosotsani

The revival of the “Klidonas” custom is organized by the Municipality of Prosotsani and the Thracomicrasia Cultural Association of Prosotsani, on the eve of Agianni (June 24).
According to the custom, neighborhood boys light bonfires (the boumons) at the crossroads as soon as the sun goes down. The Mayan wreaths brought by the girls were used for lighting. Everyone jumps over the fires (boys and girls). Jumping three times is good for your health. Immediately afterwards, the girls take the pitchers (small clay water containers) and go to the tap or well to fill water and bring it to the predetermined house, where they have prepared the special copper vessel (the bakira) to pour it into. This water is called “unspeakable” because during the transition of the girls to the tap and back, they must not speak, despite the intense teasing from the boys. If someone bows and speaks, he must pour out the water and go to refill it.
