Prosotsani, City of Martyrs

Prosotsani, City of Martyrs

The President of the Republic with Presidential Decree number 49, published in the Government Gazette 79, issue one on June 1, 2017, designates the Municipal Community of Prosotsani as a Martyr City.
This decision came after relevant opinions of the Council of State, at the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, and it is a recognition of the struggles and losses suffered by the inhabitants of these areas, during the period of the Bulgarian occupation during the Second World War.
It is a designation given by the state to cities and villages that have suffered great destruction in human lives and material damage during the resistance against the occupying forces of the period 1941-1944. In this case, the Bulgarian fascists executed 148 Prosotsani residents during the events of Drama on September 29, 1941. A related monument – a cenotaph with the names of all those executed is at the entrance of the Prosotsani cemetery.
