The custom is part of the Dionysian Acts of Drama, the Twelve-day institution that dates back to antiquity. The custom unfolds on the day of Agianni, on January 7, at the church in Mikropolis.
Koudounas comes out after the divine service to the church courtyard. From there he starts with the rest of the participants of the event to go back to the houses of the village where there are celebrants, where in a cheerful atmosphere he distributes wishes to the Saints, who in turn treat him and give him money. The money collected is donated to the church and then a big party is organized in the school yard. Only men strictly participate in the custom, the women just watch, while a camel also takes part in the events.
The custom symbolizes fertility and the beginning of a new era. Koudounas’ step is sharp to make a noise with the bells he wears and to ward off evil. The camel symbolizes patience and abundance while the wedding the beginning of a new era and eugenics.
