Maara Cave (Angitis)

Maara Cave (Angitis)

One of the most important tourist attractions of the region is the cave of the Angitis River, which has the uniqueness of being the largest river cave in the world. The Angitis cave is located about 25 km northwest of Drama, in the municipality of Prosotsani and can be visited over a length of 500 meters, while in total it extends over 21 km.
The route through the cave is impressive, as it takes place on a “walkway” that runs the length of the cave with its beautiful stalactites, sometimes over the calm waters of the river and sometimes over the noisy ones when following a course on a sloping riverbed. Also impressive is the river’s exit through the mountain, through a small arched opening at the base at the base of a small domed cave (wheel room). This hall has a diameter of 40 meters and a maximum height of 15 meters and was known because of the natural opening and was the starting point for cavers.
The other name of the cave is Maara, a name that probably derives from either Arabic for “small cave” or Hebrew for “water from the mountain”. The river, rushing out of the cave, follows a course through a dense vegetation of plane trees and creates a very beautiful atmosphere.
The Angitis, the largest of the tributaries of the Strymon River, with a length of about 50 km, continues its journey and at the height of the village of Symvoli, receives the waters from the springs of Drama, from where it starts a winding route between vertical rocks, forming the homonymous gorge of the Angitis.
