The most important reason to participate in an excursion to the forest of Elatia is that it is the largest forest in our country (700 square kilometers) on the Greek-Bulgarian border, with the only spruce forest and a landscape similar to that of central and northern Europe.
Walking in the forest, apart from the tall spruce (50-60 meters), the black pine and the forest pine, one can see beech, oak, birch, birch, chestnut, hazelnut, maple, cedar, cedar, fir, alder, rose, blueberry, etc.
With its rich biodiversity, Fir Tree is a huge natural park with almost 1800 species of plants, 36 species of reptiles, 139 species of birds and 40 species of mammals: among them brown bears, foxes, bobcats, wolves, wolves, jackals, deer, wild boars, wild rabbits, badgers, badgers, stone martens, weasels, squirrels, rabbits, otters, etc.
The area is also an Important Bird Area (IBA GR 014) and provides an opportunity to practise visual and aural identification of forest species, and to observe and photograph species that are not easily found (Lophophanes, Pyrrulas, Mountain Dendrobats), with the even rarer Wild Boar and Woodcock. The area also has woodpeckers, the most important being the Pine Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker and White-crowned Woodpecker, and puffins. In addition, there are nocturnal raptors such as the Hoopoe, Sparrowhawk and Aegolius and raptors such as the Wedge-tailed Godwit, Diplosaur, Snake Eagle and Hawk.
