A small artificial lake near the border with Bulgaria that within a few years has helped the development of the fauna of the area and is an oasis of recreation for hikers. The lake is surrounded by habitats that are renowned for the richness of the fauna and flora they host. It is located at the westernmost point of the prefecture of Drama and the nearest village from which the lake takes its name is Katafyto, 2 km away. In the north, the imposing mountain range of Orvilos rises steeply and in the south it is embraced by the northern ends of the famous forest of Kykla that connects the mountains of Vrontous with Menoikio. To the east lies the plain of Vathytopos, for the irrigation of which the lake was constructed, which is located at an altitude of 840 meters, has an area of 125 hectares and a perimeter of 2.3 km with a capacity of 72,000 cubic meters. It is fed by the Persek and Sine torrents and other smaller streams, and in turn feeds the Vathytopou stream that runs off to the east.
Lake Katafytou is distinguished by its idyllic landscape and the small island to the west, which is connected to the shores by a small bridge. Wooden tables and benches have been placed around the lake, so that one can observe in comfort many species of birdlife that visit the lake. From its banks starts a beautiful 18 km trail that reaches the peak of Tsolias of Orvilos at 2,200 m.
