In the location “Koutra” 72 km north of Drama in the area of Elatia there is the Forest Village of Elatia among dense forests of spruce and pine. The most remarkable tree species is the impressive spruce, which in Greece is found only here because it prefers more northern European countries. These are imposing colossuses that exceed thirty metres with hanging branches that have a dramatic appearance like dark veils and form dense and atmospheric forests. The Elatia region is uniquely special and certainly different from the monotonous, flat counterpart forests of northern Europe because of the great variety of trees and plants.

East of Forest Village of Elatia is the valley of “Stravorema”, which is an ideal place for outdoor recreation. Its name is due to the meanders of the stream of the same name, which creates a beautiful meadow. The riverside downhill route of the nearby Stravorema, suitable for hiking but tough even for four-wheel drive vehicles, crosses the forest road of the Megalo Rema.

The wonderful forest paths that have been carved out starting from the forest village offer unforgettable routes for hiking enthusiasts.
