The “Custom of the Arapids” is revived on Epiphany and is considered one of the most impressive of all events. It consists of groups of 5-6 people who are disguised as “Arapids” who have black flocked capes and peaked visors, headdresses made of sheepskin. Three large bells are tied around their waist, while in their hands they hold a long wooden sword as well as a bag with the ashes of the Twelve Days, hitting with it those they meet “for good”.
All the groups of “Arapids” parade together in the streets, under the deafening sounds of their bells. Two team captains battle until the final downfall of one. Afterwards, around the fallen leader, everyone gathers, in a mystagogy, which ends with the resurrection of the dead and the peculiar frantic dance of everyone, which follows. This performance symbolizes the death of Dionysus by the Titans and his resurrection by Zeus and at the same time the coming of spring.
