The Municipal Community of Kato Nevrokopi, the Association of Asia Minor & Cappadocian Links and the Municipality of K. Nevrokopi are organizing the revival of the traditional custom “SAGIA” which takes place on the eve of Epiphany.
According to the custom, a huge bonfire is created that lights up the entire square and around the fire a circular traditional dance is set up by the villagers. Various fasting dishes are offered, raisin, plum or apricot compote accompanied by red wine.
This event Epiphany Eve, like many others during the period of the twelve days in Greece, is a complex ritual act, which also contains a religious dimension and whose main purpose is eueteria, i.e. the good year, an element that is emphasized with the fire, the wishes, the dances and the songs.
The custom has its roots in Cappadocia.
